Apart from the discomfort, and the suggestion it can cause infertility in men, such a practice can limit the life of the machine's processor and, in extreme cases, cause it to self-destruct.

Hewlett Packard, the world's biggest manufacturer of personal computers, has come up with an innovative solution which is cool in both senses of the world.

HP Labs have developed a PC cooling system called HP CoolSense which introduces accelerometers to laptops that automatically detect what type of surface it has been placed on and provide the right level of cooling.

Demonstrating a CoolSense equipped laptop at the company's A New HP World event in Shanghai, China, Paul Donovan, general manager of HP's product marketing personal systems group, said: ''If I move this PC from a table into the palm of my hands or onto my lap the temperature gets reduced. No more sweaty laps on airplanes. No more kids jumping on you and your lap is sweaty when you're on the couch.''

The internal workings of HP CoolSense-equipped laptops were redesigned to minimise heat and disperse what little heat is generated through strategically placed vents. The designers have also used soft-touch paint on the CoolSense-equipped laptop's case, and non-conductive surfaces where possible, to disperse the heat.
Since HP CoolSense will add to a PC's power consumption, and affect battery such as IBM 92P1089 Battery, IBM 92P1087 Battery, IBM 08K8196 Battery, IBM 92P1102 Battery, IBM 92P1077 Battery, IBM 92P1073 Battery, IBM 08K8199 Battery, IBM 08K8198 Battery, IBM 08K8197 Battery, IBM 92P1075 Battery life, the user can choose from three settings in the HP Thermal Assistant optimal cooling, quiet or optimal performance.

Ted Clark, general manager of HP's notebook global business unit in the personal systems group, said the innovation had been customer driven.

Beats Audio, another HP innovation showcased in Shanghai, is the result of a partnership with United States music producer and rapper Dr Dre and music producer Jimmy Iovine, solves a problem with music played on laptops which, for many, has become their default hi-fi system. Music ripped from compact discs to MP3 files, or other digital music formats, lose fidelity. The problem is compounded by computer systems that are not designed to deliver high fidelity music.

''Everyone on my team is probably smiling in the audience right now, '' Mr Donovan said. ''A lot of our customers simply do not know the limitations of the sound quality that they have . . . This is particularly enhanced on a mobile device because sound quality is compromised by the fact that it's a mobile device.''
Mr Donovan played a track on a laptop without Beats Audio. ''OK, enough of that because it's not good enough, '' he said. The difference between that, and the crystal clear Beats Audio sound that followed, was astounding. ''HP has completely redefined the audio experience with Beats Audio.''
